Gideon Hausner Jewish Day School, a TK-8th grade Jewish community day school in Palo Alto, CA with over 300 students, is seeking a Director of Jewish Studies.
As a member of the senior administrative team, the Director of Jewish Studies works very closely with the Head of School and the academic leadership team in developing and implementing strategic initiatives.
The Director of Jewish Studies serves as an instructional leader who directs the development of curricula, and promotes faculty’s on-going professional development especially through observing and giving timely constructive feedback to faculty.
The Director of Jewish Studies serves as a senior administrator, reporting to the Head of School. S/he is the point person for student and parents’ questions and concerns about Jewish Studies. In addition, S/he will serve as a representative of the school to the broader community. Effective communication, collaboration and proactive management is key to success in this position.
As an instructional leader, the Director of Jewish Studies is responsible for:
- Working in close partnership with faculty and the learning support team to guide, evaluate and improve upon the academic program to ensure that it meets the needs of all learners
- Promoting an educational vision and effectively manage day-to-day operations that puts student learning and the student experience as the focus of his/her work
- Serving as a resource to Jewish Studies staff planning, leading and overseeing school rituals (Kabbalat Shabbat, tefilah, havdalah) and holiday programs
- Teaching at least 2 Jewish Studies courses in lower and/or Middle School
- Coordinating, leading or overseeing all-school Jewish holiday celebrations.
- Serving as a liaison to congregations and as a representative of the school in the larger community
- Ensuring quality instruction by inspiring and collaborating with faculty to improving teaching and learning
- Overseeing the scope and sequence of Jewish Studies curriculum
- Planning and orchestrating annual 8th grade Israel trip
- Ordering textbooks and supplies for Jewish Studies
- Developing and implementing Jewish adult education programs for parents
- Representing the school in public forums and partnering in community outreach and recruitment activity
- Envisioning, planning and executing orientation for new teachers, professional development days, and faculty meetings in close collaboration with other administrators and the instructional leadership team
- Providing timely and effective supervision and evaluation of faculty, ensuring that all faculty receive regular feedback on their teaching and overall performance
- Making recommendations to the Head of School regarding the hiring, retention, and assignment of faculty
Leadership Qualities:
- Leadership, organization, and management skills along with outstanding interpersonal skills, and the proven ability to lead change and improvement initiatives;
- Deep understanding of K-8 school culture, curricula and pedagogy through experience working in K-8 setting;
- Ability to model and to lead others effectively in managing relationships, navigating conflict, and fostering a positive work environment;
- Collaborative leadership style
- Reflective thinking with a willingness to examine and grow his/her own leadership practice
- Creative problem-solving and the ability to envision new, compelling educational programs
- Capacity to partner with HOS and other school leaders in fundraising, donor cultivation and recruitment.
Preference will be given to candidates with previous teaching and administrative experience in a K-8 Jewish Day School, with proven leadership skills, and with an advanced Jewish Studies and/or Rabbinic degree.

The salary range for this position is $140,000-$175,000. However, a job offer will typically fall in the range of 80%-120% of the established mid-point. An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate and the equity of individuals working in a similar role.
Controller
Controller
This is a 12-month, full-time, exempt, salaried position, with competitive compensation and benefits. The preferred start date is 05/01/2023
Job Description:
The Controller reports to the Chief Financial Officer. This candidate will be responsible for the supervision of all aspects of the accounting function including, but not limited to, planning, directing and coordinating all accounting operational functions, managing the accumulation and consolidation of all financial data necessary for an accurate accounting of consolidated business results, and coordinating and preparing internal and external financial statements. Strong GAAP knowledge is required. In addition, the capacity to lead aspects of the school’s operational needs as assigned by the CFO is highly desired. Non-profit or school experience is preferred, but not required. The Controller also manages and prepares schedules for the annual audit. Additional responsibilities include the streamlining of processes and other special projects as needed.
Required Skills and Responsibilies:
- Mastery of Quickbooks and Excel
- ADP payroll experience
- A/R and A/P functions
- Management of monthly bank statements, journal entries, annual audits, annual property tax statements, end of year 1099s, and 1095s
- Reconciliation of credit cards
- Maintenance of 403b, 457, and FSA plans
- Familiarity with online services including Paypal, Blackbaud, Venmo, etc.
- Managing bill collections
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree or higher
- 5+ years experience as controller or comparable responsibilities
- Experience in non-profit accounting
- Experience working in a School environment preferred
Compensation:

Qualified candidates will ideally have a strong background in Tanach, Rabbinic literature, Jewish History and Israel Education. Ideal candidates will be comfortable in and committed to working in a pluralistic Jewish setting that welcomes students from all Jewish backgrounds. - Responsibilities include teaching Jewish Studies and facilitating Tefillah.
- Candidate should possess the ability and willingness to work with students in various group settings using multiple teaching methods.
- Candidate will lead an Advisory class to foster year-long academic, social and emotional growth for a small group of students in conjunction with other faculty members and the school counselor.
- Candidate will teach one elective per semester. Electives are a faculty members’ personal choice and do not need to be related to their core subject.
- Previous Jewish Studies teaching experience required.
- Effective classroom management is important.
- Experience in an interdisciplinary environment with an emphasis on collaboration is especially valuable.
- Bachelor’s degree and advanced Jewish education required.
- Full-time or part time salaried position.
- Candidate should be comfortable with technology and open to acquiring new technology skills.
- Regular attendance at faculty meetings and open houses is required. As our school is community centered, attendance at additional school activities is strongly encouraged.
- General pay range $65,000-90,000, salary may be higher depending on experience.

Gideon Hausner seeks dynamic, committed, creative individuals to serve as assistant teachers. The successful candidate will work alongside experienced lead teachers. S/he will be responsible for assisting the lead teachers in teaching all content areas (language arts, math, science, Jewish studies) and may be asked to work 1:1 or with small groups of students. In addition, the assistant teacher will assist with providing feedback to students, managing the learning environment, and preparing instructional materials. S/he will also accompany the students to other special classes during the week including art, music, library, PE, maker and provide assistance in these classrooms.

- Support students in the classroom through individual and small group instruction.
- Actively collaborate with grade level/department colleagues and other instructional team members.
- Attend and actively participate in all faculty meetings.
- Participate in special school events including, but not limited to, Open House, Back to School Night, STEM Fair, and special student performances. Attendance at other community/school events is encouraged.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Education/Experience
- Candidate should possess the ability and willingness to work with young students in various group settings using multiple teaching methods.

Compensation
- Competitive salary. Pay ranges from $38,500-56,000 depending on experience.
