Incoming Head Of School
Dear Hausner Community,
It is with great enthusiasm and pleasure, we announce that the Board of Directors of Gideon Hausner Day School has appointed Rabbi Daniel Lehmann as Hausner’s next Head of School beginning on July 1st, 2021.
Rabbi Lehmann was chosen from a large national pool of candidates after a thorough search process. “Danny brings passion, wisdom, courage and humility. These were the qualities of leadership our community was seeking and in Danny we found,” noted Ronit Alcheck Bodner, Chair of the Search Committee.
Rabbi Lehmann, Ph.D. has devoted over 30 years to leading pluralistic Jewish education and interreligious learning, programs and institutions. He served as Founding Headmaster of Gann Academy (formerly The New Jewish High School of Greater Boston), Founding Director of the Berkshire Institute of Music and Arts (BIMA), co-founder of the Hevruta Gap-year Program of the Shalom Hartman Institute, co-founder of the Jewish high school Moot Beit Din competition, and co-founder of the North American Association of Jewish High Schools. His most recent leadership positions include president of Hebrew College in Newton, MA and president of the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, CA. He has served as board chair of the Boston Theological Institute and as a member of the Board of Camp Yavneh. He is currently a board member of Kehillah Jewish High School in Palo Alto, CA.
Danny received his undergraduate degree in philosophy and rabbinic ordination from Yeshiva University. He earned a Ph.D. in Education and Jewish Studies from New York University with a dissertation focused on philosophies, theologies and pedagogies of pluralism and their application to Jewish and general education. He has written and lectured extensively on pluralism, Jewish texts and theologies, Jewish education and interreligious leadership. He is married to Lisa Soleymani Lehmann, M.D., Ph.D., and they are the proud parents of three grown children: Hillel, Eliyahu and Shira.
We are grateful to all who participated in the search process, especially those on the Search Committee whose commitment to Hausner was paramount to a successful outcome: Lauren Berman, Jill Blair, Maia Elder-Kadar, Stacey Kertsman, Rabbi Chaim Koritzinsky, Michal Miasnik, Stacy Nitschke, Ron Sandel and Greg Waldorf. As Chair of the Search Committee, Ronit Alcheck Bodner ran a deeply thorough, meaningful and thoughtful process. Under Ronit’s leadership and with invaluable support from our search firm, DRG, this group has dedicated countless hours over the past seven months listening to our community, convening with and vetting candidates, calling references and getting to know the candidates.
Thank you also to all the parents, faculty, staff and community members who participated in the discovery meetings over the summer, as well as those who filled out the online survey. Your contributions during the various stages of the search process were critical in shaping the description of the qualities we were looking for in our next Head.
We are immensely grateful to Carol Piraino whose strong and exemplary leadership as Interim Head of School has and continues to support our faculty, staff, students and families through the challenges of COVID-19, including the complex navigation required to open and keep our school open in the last few months. Carol has been an incredibly valuable partner to the Board this year balancing the unprecedented challenges of day to day operations during COVID-19 with extremely thoughtful planning for Hausner’s long term future. She is eager to support a smooth transition and welcome Danny to the leadership team in the 2021 academic year.
As 2020 winds down, we look with hope and anticipation to what 2021 will bring. Starting in January, we will be scheduling opportunities for Danny to engage with the Hausner community and set the stage for a warm welcome when he officially starts in July.
With excitement and good wishes to you all,
Karen Strobel and Yaron Simler
Co-Presidents, Hausner Board of Directors
