Hausner Gives Back 2021

Springevent2021finalheaderforinvite

We are excited to welcome your family to the first ever Hausner Gives Back Spring Community Event—Sunday, May 2 at 2 pm (virtual). This inaugural event provides an opportunity for the entire Hausner community to join together for a day of giving back. At Hausner we've always prioritized community and tzedakah, and now more than ever, we want to enact the values of Justice, Justice Pursue.

Please review the below Tzedakah Circle programs and choose one for your family to participate in together. There are recommended grade ranges to help you narrow it down and in most cases we can provide supply kits for each child participating so everyone gets an opportunity to engage, interact and enact Tzedakah in our community.

Event Schedule:

2:00pm | Gather with the entire community for a Welcome Ceremony

  • Opening Remarks - Mallary Alcheck, Event Chair
  • Unveiling of the legacy Justice, Justice, Pursue Art Installation - Rachel Cedar, Event Committee Member
  • Reflections - Carol Piraino, Interim Head of School
  • Meet & Greet - Daniel Lehmann, Incoming Head of School

2:15pm-3:00pm | Attendees proceed to their pre-selected Tzedakah Circles

For questions contact hgb@hausnerschool.org. We can't wait to come together to give back with you.

Tzedakah Circle Overviews and Registration

The Gift Of Reading (recommended for K-5 and 6th-Adult)

This Tzedakah Circle will mobilize our community around the pressing issue of childhood literacy. In the spirit of Tzedek Tzedek Tirdof, the Hausner community will partner with the Jewish Coalition for Literacy (JCL) to support underserved children in our community where educational inequities have grown due to the pandemic.

Track 1:
K-5 Hausner students (and their adults) will purchase books from the JCL wish list for the home libraries of JCL participants. During the program, students will decorate personalized bookplates and Hausner’s beloved librarian, Cressida Hansen, will guide students in writing notes about their own favorite books to be sent to JCL students.

Register: The Gift Of Reading Track 1

Track 2:
Middle school students and adults will hear from Kara Sanchez, Hausner parent and volunteer with the Spanish-speaking immigrant community about the impact of the Covid crisis on vulnerable students of the Peninsula. They will engage with teen JCL volunteers, participate in a “Book Walk” used in tutoring, and learn about the tutoring experience. Middle school students are welcome to register independently.

Additional volunteer opportunities include tutoring in a Hausner supported online JCL summer literacy camp and specifically for rising 8th graders the Reading Buddies program as part of students service learning for the 2021/2022 school year.

Responding To Hunger (recommended for K-8)

Responding to hunger in our community, attendees of this Tzedakah Circle will participate in a game of “Shopping Bingo”. This interactive game will have families filling up their bingo cards as they collect items from their own pantries. Once their cards are full, the items will be packaged in an attractive and useful reusable bag. Gift bags will be delivered to Jewish Family and Children's Services clients. Bags and game supplies provided. Completed bags should be returned to Hausner on Monday 5/3.

For All Abilities (recommended for K-8)

Join this Tzedakah Circle for an inspiring discussion with a 10 year old student advocate on using technology to empower students who are visually impaired, like herself. Participants will engage in a live demo and learn to create accessible content via JiTap app to be used by the children of Beit Issie Shapiro, Israel’s leading non-profit organization furthering the rights, opportunities and services for children and adults with disabilities. iPad and internet access required (Hausner issued iPads can be enabled for this project). Students will have until Friday 5/7 to complete their project. Tech support will be available.

Lifting Spirits (recommended for K-8)

Connecting with our elders, learning about Shavuot, and giving of ourselves are all expressions of L'dor v Dor (from generation to generation) and present meaningful ways to engage in Tzedek, Tzedek, Tirdof.

In anticipation of Shavuot, participants will create beautiful flower arrangements and cards for the seniors at the Moldaw Residences in Palo Alto. Families will experience a mini Shavuot seder highlighting Judaism's connection to nature and learn about the kaleidoscope of celebration that is Shavuot. Supplies provided. Floral arrangements must be delivered to Moldaw Residences by 5 pm on Sunday 5/2.

Limud Beyachad: Learning Together (recommended for ages 13 to 113)

Social Justice is woven into the fabric of Judaism. Our endeavor to pursue justice demands that we understand how social justice is part of a bigger picture of Jewish life. This program will expand your perspective on Jewish social justice, and strengthen the connection between your social justice work and the rest of your Jewish life.

Track 1:
Learn together with local Jewish educators and Hausner community members Zoe Fertik, Rabbi Chaim Koritzinsky and Rabbi Sarah Graff. Each Jewish educator is offering text study and discussion of our school's theme, Tzedek, Tzedek Tirdof (Justice, Justice Pursue). Use the opportunity to learn Jewish text, to hear from our tradition, and to learn from each other.

Register: Learning Together Track 1

Track 2:
Hear from Santa Clara County District Attorney (and Hausner parent '13 & ‘15) Jeff Rosen. A nationally-recognized leader in criminal justice reform, Mr. Rosen’s focus since being elected to the position in 2011 has included jail population reduction, diversion programs for non-violent offenders, expungements for low level drug crimes, prison reform, and the highest ethical prosecution standard. He created a first of its kind, and nationally acclaimed Conviction Integrity Unit to investigate innocence claims and implement the most professional and ethical practices in criminal prosecution. He also implemented the twelve-week Parent Project® course, completed by thousands of local families, to keep young people out of the criminal justice system by helping parents of troubled teens strengthen their families. Learn more about DA Rosen's work, and how Jewish values influence his commitment to pursue justice.
