2022 Israel Study Tour: Day #8

Ben Smietana

Climbing the Masada, Floating on the Dead Sea

Today was our last day in the desert before heading to Jerusalem.

Up at the crack of dawn, we journeyed to the Masada, the site of the fateful last stand against the Roman Empire in 73 CE. After ascending the path next to the Roman siege ramp, we explored the ruins of the site, including Herod's palace, water cisterns, a bathing pool, a temple, and many other interesting structures. We exited down the opposite side of the mountain, a grueling hike down the snake path.

Next, we headed north to the Dead Sea. The students had a blast floating in the salt-laden water and covering themselves in the Dead Sea's salubrious mud.

We finally left the desert, heading further north until we reached Jerusalem. Upon entering the city, we stopped at Mount Scopus on the campus of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem to catch a scenic perspective of the city and to identify important landmarks.

After checking into our hotel, we finished the evening on Ben Yehuda street to eat dinner and buy souvenirs.

Tomorrow we will visit the Kotel and the Old City.

Micaela and Charlotte's Summary

We started our day at 5:30am to hike up the Masada. There, we learned and saw the remains of archeological sites. We were told all about how the Romans captured the fortress. Surprisingly, it was easier to hike up rather than down the mountain on the snake path.

Then, we drove to the Dead Sea, where we had so much fun floating around and putting mud on our sunburnt selves. We then went to the pool where we hosted handstand competitions and chicken fights (also, Chava is making us add that she and Charlotte beat Micaela and Tamara in a chicken fight).

Later, we drove to Jerusalem and settled into our hotel. After much needed chill time we enjoyed an evening out on Ben Yehuda street.
