A New Tradition for 4th Grade: Celebrating Kiddush Levana Together

Recently, Hausner’s 4th grade community came together for a unique and inspiring new educational experience as they participated in the ancient Jewish ritual of Kiddush Levana, the sanctification of the moon. With thoughtful framing by Director of Jewish Life and Learning Shifra Elman, the evening highlighted the moon’s deep symbolic meaning in Jewish tradition, representing renewal, resilience, and the cyclical nature of time. Just as the Jewish calendar follows the lunar cycle, our students and their families gathered to honor this connection and to reflect on the ways our traditions continue to guide and inspire us.

The evening began with an introduction to the practice of Kiddush Levana and a reflection on how our ancestors once experienced the majesty of the night sky more directly than we do today. Families explored how light and darkness shape our emotions and relationships, discovering that this ritual, which centers on greeting one another with “Shalom Aleichem / Peace be upon you,” invites connection even in the dark. Our Shinshinim, Shira and Ziv, led a creative icebreaker that helped families connect through the Hebrew letters of levana (moon), paving the way for a joyful and song-filled ceremony under the stars led by Rabbi Danny.

The celebration continued in the Beit Tefillah, where Aviv guided families through a lively text study on the Mishnah’s teachings about witnessing the new moon and the sacred act of marking time. The evening concluded with black-and-white “half-moon” cookies, a sweet symbol of togetherness and renewal. This meaningful night not only introduced families to the 4th grade community but also deepened our shared appreciation for Jewish learning, tradition, and the power of light to bring us together.
