Avodah La’Olam: A 7th Grade Journey in Jewish Philanthropy
Robin Feuchtwang, Avodah La'Olam Lead Teacher

7th grade is a milestone year, as Hausner students become teenagers and many celebrate their b’nei mitzvah. Avodah La’Olam, now in its 20th year, is Hausner’s unique 7th grade course designed to guide students through this meaningful transition by deepening their understanding of Tzedakah—righteous and ethical giving—and their role in making a positive impact on the world.

Rooted in the principle of Tikkun Olam—the ongoing effort to repair the world and improve lives—Avodah La’Olam helps students engage meaningfully with the mitzvah of giving Tzedakah and the Jewish values that support it. The program nurtures both ethical action and a growing sense of personal responsibility, encouraging students to recognize their power to create meaningful change.

Throughout the year, students explore Jewish texts and values related to social responsibility, philanthropy, and community engagement—discovering how ancient wisdom speaks directly to the challenges of today. They reflect on causes that move them and are introduced to the nonprofit world to find an organization aligned with their passions.

As a teacher, it is deeply gratifying to introduce students to a realm many 12- to 13-year-olds have not yet explored. Students research the missions, programs, impact, and donor sustainability of various nonprofits. They learn to interpret financial reports, IRS filings, and independent charity ratings. Through this vetting process, each student selects an organization that resonates with them and reaches out to request an interview. They craft thoughtful questions and conduct interviews—either in person or over Zoom—gaining firsthand insight into the work being done.

Next, students become fundraisers. They craft compelling written solicitations, create posters, and run bake sales to raise funds for their chosen organization. For many, these steps are entirely new—and also among the most empowering experiences of their year.

The journey culminates in a community-wide Celebration of Tzedakah, where students present their chosen nonprofits to an audience of parents, peers, teachers, and nonprofit leaders. This year’s event, held on May 28, featured 26 organizations addressing a wide range of issues—including the environment, elder care, antisemitism and support for Israel, disability rights, poverty, education, healthcare, medical research, and animal welfare.

Seven local representatives attended in person, while others from across the country sent heartfelt messages that were read aloud. These reflections celebrated students’ thoughtfulness, initiative, and the impact of Avodah La’Olam. Most exciting of all: nearly $600 in donations was presented to each of the 26 organizations—a true testament to the students' dedication and the generosity of our community.

At Hausner, we strive to instill a strong foundation in Jewish wisdom and values, empowering our students to carry these principles into the world. Through Avodah La’Olam, our 7th graders are not just learning about philanthropy—they are living it, helping to shape a more just and compassionate future.
