Melissa Gordon, mother of Hausner students Esme (6th grade) and Emmet (1st grade), will be coaching track and field for Hausner this spring. Melissa has an impressive background in the sport, having won multiple gold and silver medals in the pole vault, high jump, long jump, and relay at the 1997 Maccabi Games in Israel, and competed internationally for the US team. Last year, she led Hausner’s Track & Field program, and prior to that, coached at Esme's previous school.
The program is open to students in grades 5-8 as a sport, and grades K-4 as a club program. The focus of the program is on having fun, improving technique, and learning different track events. No prior experience is required, and students who don't enjoy running can still participate in sprints, jumps, hurdles, and throws. There will be two practices a week, with the primary practice on Thursdays from 3:45 to 5 pm at the nearby Cubberly track, and an optional practice on Sundays at 1:30 pm at the Gunn high school track. The program will also offer optional track meets for the team to attend. Both the lower school club program and middle school sports program are free of charge, and the first practice will take place on Thursday, March 23rd.
Parent/guardian attendance
Thursdays: Unlike last year, the team will be walking or jogging from school to the Cubberley track for practice on Thursdays. As a result, all lower school students need to have a parent volunteer or an upper school sibling present during practice. If the parent is not comfortable with the upper school sibling being responsible for the lower school sibling, then the parent must attend practice as a volunteer. This change will lead to a more productive practice at the track.
Sundays: Parents are welcome to drop off their children on Sundays, join in the workout, or chat with other parents while their children exercise.
For lower school students interested in participating, please fill out this Google sheet, sign this liability waiver form, and upload signed copy to this google drive folder. Upper school parents who want to receive emails on practices and meets can also add their email addresses to the specified column next to their registration.
